Base64

Encode text or files to Base64 and decode back — full Unicode support.

About Base64

The Base64 tool encodes text or files into Base64 and decodes them back. Base64 is widely used to embed images in HTML or CSS, send binary data through JSON or APIs, and read attachments inside email source.

Accented and non-Latin characters are fully supported thanks to UTF-8 encoding, along with URL-safe Base64 and data URI prefixes.

How to use

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Type text, paste a Base64 string or pick a file to encode (up to 25MB).
  3. Turn on URL-safe Base64 or the data URI prefix if needed.
  4. Copy the result, download the decoded file, or click "Swap" to turn the result into new input.

Key features

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 a form of encryption?

No. Base64 is just a way to represent data as text, and anyone can decode it. Never rely on it to protect passwords or secrets.

Why is the encoded string longer than the original?

Base64 uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, so the result is usually about 33% larger.

What is URL-safe Base64?

It is a variant that replaces + and / with - and _ and drops trailing = signs, so the string can be used in links without further encoding.
